Ringer, The

Johnny Knoxville’s Steve pretends to be a retard named Jeffie so he can compete in the Special Olympics and win money in The Ringer. Directed by Barry W. Blaustein (who’s written many Eddie Murphy movies like Coming to America, Boomerang and The Nutty Professor) and written by Ricky Blitt (Family Guy), the story is not stupid or tasteless as one would expect. It’s silly but is also funny, and despite a very weak beginning, it gets very good once Knoxville gets to the pre-Olympic competitions and is joined by the other mentally challenged athletes. Sorry about the retard remark before, btw.

But why does he go to the Olympics? Because he needs to raise money to pay for surgery for a friend, who is not actually a friend but an old guy he should’ve fired at work but instead decided to hire as a lawn mower and after an accident the guy ended up with three fingers chopped off his hand. And it’s a huge hospital bill because apparently in this movie’s time there are none of those organizations that pay the bills for you if you can’t. But oh well, I guess it’s necessary for the story to work. There’s another reason too, as Steve’s uncle Gary (played by a what-the-hell-are-you-doing-taking-these-roles Brian Cox) needs money to pay the mobs for his gambling. At the Olympics, Jeffie must compete against Jimmy (played by Leonard Flowers), the mentally challenged superstar who’s won the games 6 times in a row. There’s also Katherine Heigl’s Lynn, an instructor at the Olympics who helps Jeffie along the way while he falls in love with her.

There’s been some controversy lately about this movie, as South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker are saying the movie rips off an episode of their series they released in early 2004, but the movie’s producers say the script was written before that. Lawsuits may be filed, but whatever the outcome, the South Park episode was funny, and movie is funny too. Supported (mostly) by a cast of real life mentally challenged actors, The Ringer shows its heart, and it’s surprisingly respectful of the characters we all thought it would be making fun of.

The Movie

There’s nothing I love more than being able to sincerely “champion” a good ol’ mindless popcorn flick. And while I was wasn’t all that impressed with the original Underworld upon first viewing, I’ve slowly grown a small affection for the flick. So when I sat down to visit with Underworld: Evolution for a second spin, I found myself actively trying to find good things to say. I looked over at the flick’s anemic approval rating at Rotten Tomatoes and thought, “Hey, I’d really like to add a positive review to the mix, because I love popcorn movies and I think I’m a pretty good judge on what makes a good one.”

Despite my best efforts, I found only a few small nuggets of pleasure in Underworld: Evolution. I don’t think it’s an outright crap-heap, as far as action sequels go, but it’s just too darn dour, convoluted, and redundant to rally much enthusiasm.

We open with a “long-ago” prologue before picking up precisely where Underworld left off: Death Dealer Vampiress Selene and her purple-yet-hunky vampire/werewolf cross-breed of a boyfriend have thwarted their numerous foes and finally have a moment to make out when…

Whoops, someone went and woke up Markus, a very unpleasant Daddy Vampire who’d really like to know why his family is completely dead and one of his sexy underlings is making out with a purple semi-Lycan. There are three or four other plot-threads, but they’re all very gnarled and twisted and basically unimportant. All you need to know is that the amazingly hot chick in the skin-tight pleather jumpsuit is the hero, and everyone else is grist for the gore mill.

Series creator Len Wiseman is really stuck in a “damned if you do / damned if you don’t” situation here. Focus exclusively on the action scenes and the thing becomes a cacophonous orgy of pointless mayhem — but focus too heavily on the “character stuff” and the audience begins to realize how goofy all the goings-on actually are. (I mean, points for trying, but does anyone think the romance between Selene and Michael is more interesting than, say, a vampire being pulverized by some helicopter blades?)

So while it’s certainly admirable that Underworld: Evolution is trying to deliver some actual emotion and/or character beneath all the chaotic stabbings and slick beheadings, the simple truth is this: When the Underworld flicks deviate from the action stuff, they’re both pretty dry, dumb, and frequently kinda laughable. The original flick gets a semi-pass because we were new to the whole concept, but by the time a Part 2 rolls around, you’d hope your filmmakers would accentuate the positives and minimize the negatives.

Underworld: Evolution suffers the same fate as many sequels: It was banged together rather expeditiously after the first one become a surprise hit, and as you wade through the sequel’s myriad plot turns and overbaked back-stories, you just might find yourself thinking … just get to the action already. Not even seasoned pros like Bill Nighy and Derek Jacobi can manage to cut through the tediously over-plotted shenanigans, while (again) Ms. Beckinsale is asked to do little besides pose, punch, and jam knives into screaming beasties.

Stuffed with slick production design, fantastic special effects, and a few satisfying action scenes, Underworld: Evolution is still a pretty big disappointment; the thing takes itself way too seriously and relies way too heavily on its “multi-generational gothic soap opera” exposition volleys that crop up whenever someone’s ass is not being kicked.

Even now I feel I’m being perhaps a bit too kind to the flick, but it’ll still earn a place on my Guilty Pleasures shelf, right next to a half-dozen mindless action thrillers that involve vampires, werewolves, zombies, and the mega-sexy women who love to kill them.

The DVD

Video: The anamorphic widescreen (2.40:1) transfer is quite excellent, what with all the splattering arteries and dank drippy caverns.

Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 (English or French) with optional subtitles in the same two languages. Audio quality is expectedly strong, considering we’re talking about a fancy action flick that was made about nine months ago.

Extras

There’s an audio commentary with writer/director Len Wiseman, production designer Patrick Tatopoulos, 2nd unit director Brad Martin, and editor Nicolas de Toth. Early on, the guys seem intent on delivering production information and they keep the comments flowing smoothly. Wiseman mentions how much he hates the “narration” style of commentating, so he leads his team through the chat-track with success. The guys (who share a bottle of wine to keep the chatter flowing) love to focus on “where this was shot” and “ok, now THIS is a miniature and THAT is digital,” but if you’re a fan of the series, the commentary’s not half bad.

A half-dozen featurettes are also included, the standard sort of extra material that’s not exactly EPK-style self-love, but gives only a cursory look at the behind-the-scenes activities.

Participating in the featurette interviews are: Writer/director Len Wiseman, leading lady Kate Beckinsale, producer Gary Lucchesi, executive producers James McQuaide & David Coatsworth, production designer Patrick Tatopoulos, creature designer Guy Himber, FX supervisor Payam Shohadai, sound designer Scott Gershin, prosthetics creator Kevin Mohlman, fangmaker David Beneke, 2nd unit director Brad Martin, stuntman Kurt Carley, composer Marco Beltrami, and actors Scott Speedman, Tony Curran, Bill Nighy, Derek Jacobi, and Steven Mackintosh.

Bloodlines: From Script to Screen (13:25) covers the creation of the second story and the lead actors’ impressions of the sequel

The Hybrid Theory (12:59) looks at the FX work, both practical and computer-generated.

Making Monsters Roar (11:56) deals with the creature creations, from the new-fangled werewolves to the mega-fanged bloodsuckers.

The War Rages On (9:52) focuses on the extensive stuntwork in the flick.

Building a Saga (12:54) is all about the production design and locations.

Music and Mayhem (11:49) covers the sound design and music.

In addition to the commentary and the featurettes you’ll also get a music video for “Her Portrait in Black,” by Atreyu, which I find amusing because the band’s all dark and angry despite being named after a character from The Neverending Story, and a bunch of previews for When a Stranger Calls, Ultraviolet, London, Click, Underworld, Hostel, The Boondocks, Marie Antoinette, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Benchwarmers, Silent Hill, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, and The James Bond Ultimate Collection.

I suppose those Underworld: Evolution trailers are being reserved for the inevitable Underworld: Fully Evolved, Uncut and Unrated edition.

Final Thoughts

I guess it’s just that an action/horror combo really speaks to the geeky little 12-year-old in me, and I get a little more forgiving where bad writing, confusing editing, and ass-backwards storytelling are concerned. If you dug the first Underworld, I suspect you’ll like this one too, only not as much. And if you hated the first one and you’re hoping the sequel’s an improvement, I suggest you go ahead and rent something else.

Shrek The Third has exploded onto DVD and its more of the same. More of the same ogre, more of the same writing and more of the same basic fairy tale premise of good vs evil in a sugary family friendly environment. It is all more of the same but its far from ho-hum and does it well.

Shrek and Fiona are having to take on the duties of being the active king and queen of Far, Far Away. When we left him, the King was quite literally croaking. They’re not very comfortable in these roles, so the King says to them, “If you can find the heir to the throne and bring him back, the Kingdom will be in good hands, then you can return to swamp and live your lives.” Which is what they want to do.

Shrek 3 really doesnt offer anything terribly new but we do get to meet a bunch of new characters and also re-acquaint ourselves with the characters from the past films. It has your typical witty writing and characters with humor that works on all levels for adults and children.

Although Shrek 3 can not touch the first Shrek film, what sequel or in this case three-quel can? Shrek 3 is a family friendly fun film that moves along quickly and will provide a fun and entertaining experience for your family movie night. I would say this is a must rent or buy ( depending on your tastes ) for fans of the original SHREK.

While You Were Sleeping *** (out of 5)   (1995)

Cast: Sandra Bullock, Bill Pullman, Peter Gallagher, Jack Warden, Peter Boyle

Directed By Jon Turteltaub

Director Jon Turteltaub has had a nice career for himself making sweet-natured films with heart, and WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING is a prime example.  Of course, it’s hard to go wrong with Sandra Bullock in a romantic comedy, and this marks her first among many such films to come.  Like most romantic comedies, it’s not hard to figure out what’s going to happen, but the joys come in how it gets to its inevitable destination.  As such, it’s a mostly successful crowd-pleaser that only the crankiest of movie-goers would probably dislike.

Bullock stars as Lucy, a ticket-seller for the Chicago subway system who is working during the holidays, and one of her daily pleasures is selling a ticket to a handsome and rich man, Peter (Gallagher.)  Her dreams of becoming part of his life become a reality when Lucy sees Peter getting mugged and falling onto the tracks unconscious, whereupon she saves him from certain death by moving him out of harm’s way just in the nick of time.  Through a misunderstanding at the hospital, Lucy is introduced as the now comatose Peter’s fiancée, which causes the family to readily adopt Lucy into part of their group.  Lucy doesn’t find an easy way to tell them the truth, so she goes along with it, but keeping the secret proves more and more difficult with Peter’s recovery and the fact that she is beginning to have feeling’s for Peter’s brother, Jack (Pullman.)

WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING breezes by with ease, and while it isn’t the funniest film you may have seen, it is amiable and sweet enough to watch for a pleasant diversion.  Bullock supplies all of the charm and likeability that the role requires, so this is a must watch for her fans.  Although Bill Pullman seems an unlikely choice to play as a romantic lead, somehow he manages to fit into the part just fine.  Turteltaub’s direction is about as good as it can be, given the rather conventional screenplay.  Good casting of the supporting roles as well.

WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING is recommended for fans of romantic comedies, and for those seeking mild holiday entertainment during the Winter season.

Robert De Niro (Ronin, Jackie Brown) is Paul Vitti, a New York mob boss with problems. He suffers from anxiety attacks, a lack of nerves, and even impotence. He seeks help from a psychiatrist named Ben Sobol (Crystal, Deconstructing Harry), who is reluctant to take on a crime boss as a client, but they "make him an offer he can’t refuse". The intrusion of Vitti on Sobol’s life causes many problems, including the possible dissolution of his marriage-to-be. Vitti gets even more desperate when another local thug (Palminteri, A Night at the Roxbury) wants to kill him to take over his territory.

Contrived and predictable as Analyze This may be, once it gets going, it is truly laugh-out-loud funny. De Niro has a good time spoofing all of his tough guy roles, and Crystal comes up with some memorably hilarious off-the-cuff lines. Director Harold Ramis (Groundhog Day, Caddyshack) does an excellent job never losing the comedic tone of the film, despite a rather large number of killings and gunfights, and terrific supporting players bolster an already impressive core cast.

Analyze This loses some steam in the final third, but by that time you’re probably too sore in the belly from laughing your ass off.

– Followed by Analyze That (2002).

Bride of Frankenstein Reviewed By Charles Tatum Posted 03/01/03 07:35:42

"I Do" (Awesome)

Almost seventy years old now, this sequel to the classic "Frankenstein" proves that some films are timeless, even when looking at them for the first time.Elsa Lanchester is Mary Shelley, recounting what happened after the events of the first film, on a dark and stormy night with her famous husband and Lord Byron. The film makers wisely recap the highlights of the first film, reminding the audience of the basic plot. While better than the original "Frankenstein," this film is still not technically perfect. There are quite a few editing gaffes, where someone is doing something in one shot, but not another. Whale’s direction really does not come alive until the last creation scene, which has wonderful off-center and shadowed shots. Even Karloff’s monster makeup appears softened compared to the first film.On the positives, however, the black and white atmosphere works well here. Sets or not, the high ceilings and creepy Euro look are chilling. The special effects also rival modern films, they are excellent and not cheesy in the slightest. While Karloff is good, Lanchester is excellent in her too brief role as the bride. Una O’Connor is a scream (literally) as the cowardly housekeeper who always seems to meet up with the Monster at the wrong time. Dwight Frye is underused as a lab assistant. Colin Clive is kept in the background as Frankenstein. He seems ill at ease, and the actor died a few years later as a result of alcoholism. By the way, the book and film "Gods and Monsters" got their title from this film, and a toast made by Pretorious. While this film has garnered a nearly flawless reputation in the last seven decades, it does deserve accolades. This may not terrify you like it did audiences of the past, but it is interesting to see the inspiration behind almost every monster movie made afterward.

American Pie Presents: The Naked Mile Reviewed By David Cornelius Posted 12/21/06 08:50:37

"Clearly, somebody at Universal hates us all." (Total Crap)

Remember “George Lucas in Love,” that short film that shot around the internet years back? Not only was it a terrific little comedy, but it also hit big at the right time, when parody-based internet shorts were getting up-and-comers plenty of notice and quite a few job offers. So whatever came of Joe Nussbaum, the director and co-writer of that gem? Here’s where things turn ugly. After his feature debut with the fluffy tween comedy “Sleepover” in 2004 and a brief stint writing for the Muppet snippets that played on Movies.com, Nussbaum wound up here, helming “American Pie Presents: The Naked Mile.” If you recall last year’s “American Pie Presents: Band Camp,” you will see why I’m overcome with the urge to send Nussbaum a sympathy fruit basket. This is not at all where you want your career to wind up.Yes, kids, they’ve gone and made another “American Pie” direct-to-video effort, and it seems as though Universal is content in churning these things out on a yearly basis from now on, leading the “American Pie” brand to compete with “National Lampoon” as the new trademark of suck. What we witness in “The Naked Mile” is a franchise desperate to repeat its good fortunes, so much so that there’s one awkward scene midway through in which Eugene Levy, inexplicably returning yet again as Jim’s Dad, is required to recap every memorable (and several less-than-memorable) moment from the first three films, all in a frantic grab at reminding us why we’ve even bothered to sit down with this thing in the first place. The screenplay (from first-timer Erik Lindsay) then struggles to mix the sweetness of Jason Biggs’ Jim with the sourness of Seann William Scott’s Stifler; more-of-the-same Stifler (via an obnoxious younger brother) proved to be too much in “Band Camp,” and so here we get a Stifler cousin, Erik (John White), who, in what is supposed to be a clever twist, is a Jim-esque bumbling virgin. The script has worked up a flop sweat trying to repeat the vulgarities of the formal trilogy, leaving us once again with gross-out that remember the gross but forget the joke. One gag finds our hero defecating inside a clothes dryer; another reveals horse dung on a porch, ha ha. Free-flying male ejaculate is everywhere throughout the film - including a scene involving an unsuspecting grandmother getting covered in the stuff. A drinking game ends with projectile vomit smothering a sorority gal. Crotches are kicked, punched, and otherwise mangled.Crude, sure. Vulgar, no doubt. But funny? Not at all. The filmmakers have left their funny at the door, figuring we’ll just howl at the grossness of it all, so who needs punchlines? In fact, who needs a story? Much of the movie ignores the plot entirely and instead showcases overlong party scenes and football matches. It’s not much fun watching other people have fun if that’s all there is to it. There’s an awful lot of young actors chugging beers and yelling “woo!,” which leaves the film looking like somebody’s lame home movie and not a comedy worth watching. As for the story, whenever the movie finds time for it: Erik and his high school pals head out to visit his cousin, Adam Stifler (Steve Talley), at college for a weekend of partying, culminating in “the naked mile,” in which hundreds of co-eds streak across campus. (Side note: the notion of large breasts bouncing heavily while running seems more unpleasant for the owner than is ever mentioned throughout. The same goes for male discomfort caused when running full-steam while hauling an erection. It’s why they make sports bras and cold showers, people.) Subplot no. 1: Erik’s girlfriend, Tracy (Jessy Schram), tells him he can have all the guilt-free sex while there, a choice she quickly regrets. Subplot no. 2: Stiflers and Co. repeatedly face off with an archrival frat made up of little people (led by Jordan Prentice, who, I kid you not, was one of the actors to fill the Howard the Duck suit). Jim’s Dad shows up randomly to dispense advice and, I dunno, pay for Levy’s new car.It is, surprisingly, even worse than you think it is, with hackneyed storylines, half-assed jokes, embarrassingly awful acting, and, yes, insipid direction. It’s the sort of comedy where you can place bets on which tiresome punchline will wrap up each scene, where every subplot wraps up exactly like you thought it would, only dumber. (Spoiler: Erik eventually decides not to have sex at college after all; he races home and nails Tracy all night long, all to remind us that sex isn’t everything. Um, what?) This is direct-to-video filler at its very worst, a movie that invites you to actively loathe it. Welcome to the new “American Pie.”

51st State, The

I’m uncertain as to the reasons why the producers of this film looked to Hong Kong director Ronny Yu (Bride with White Hair, Legacy of Rage) to make this Tarantino-esque screenplay fly, but the results are less than impressive.  The 51st State (changed to Formula 51 for the US release), is not just a nickname for England and its growing dependence on the United States, but, in the film, it’s also the name of a designer drug supposedly 51 times the potency of cocaine.  As a movie, this is a superficially glossy and noisy mess with nothing redeeming about it, save for a terrific performance by Samuel L. Jackson (Unbreakable, Shaft) as another of his trademark badasses.

Jackson plays Elmo McElroy, an American chemist who develops the aforementioned drug and travels to Great Britain to sell the drug’s specs for a small fortune.  Things get a little dicey, as he has an old foe on his tail, in addition to rival dealers and coppers to contend with, making even the best laid plans hard to stick to.

With some comic players from The Full Monty and Meat Loaf (Blacktop, Fight Club), one would think there might be some uproariously hilarious goings-on. Alas, this is about as wasted a cast of supporting players as I’ve seen in a film in a long time.  Not a single person (save Jackson) is properly cast according to type, with Robert Carlyle (The Beach, The World is Not Enough) and Rhys Ifans (Little Nicky, The Replacements) in particular making the worst examples of tough guys, British-style. When Meat Loaf finally takes center stage, the film sinks to depths one would have thought could not be surpassed, given the large amounts of profanity and (quite literally) fecal matter that already fills up much of the running time.

The 51st State is a loud, filthy, and mentally vacant comic-actioner that offers only a meager chuckle here and there, and a migraine otherwise.  It’s proof that the formula for making another Pulp Fiction is more than kooky characters and the F-word in every sentence.  Forget the Skittles Jackson tries to peddle, you may want to pop a few roofies before viewing this one to insure the memory of The 51st State stops by the time the credits roll.

"A Deep Impact Down Into Hell" (Total Crap)

Honestly, I’ve seen well-made depressing flicks that at least give a final touch that is uplifting and help raise your feelings towards the very end. That’s a type of example that you can find on excellent films like The Elephant Man or Kramer Vs. Kramer. But this film, just goes down into depression at its worst, and gives more of a feeling that it’s best for you to commit suicide right there whether it was the theater or the TV screen. That’s how I felt after watching this fucking awful piece of inbreeded shit. Honestly, if you even liked this movie, you’re probably a fucking retard, I was desperately looking for a suicide solution after watching this turkey, I couldn’t sleep for the rest of the night, it was JUST that bad.So, there’s e big-ass comet the size of Mount Everest, orbiting near Earth, a kid called Leo (Elijah Wood) discovers it, and becomes famous, well, many years later because the guy who confirms the discovery and finds out that the comet is in a direct path to Earth, is killed in a freak car accident, due to desperation and freakish bad luck (Bah, unoriginal). Then a MSNBC reporter called Jenny Lerner (Tea Leoni) tries to uncover a supposed sex scandal in the White House, and a girl called “Ellie.” She later finds out that it’s actually E.L.E (Extinction Level Event), and that it’s a meteor, not a girl, which is the problem. Then she meets President Tom Beck (Morgan Freeman), who tells her about the government’s plans to sent a spaceship called “The Messiah,” headed by Capt. Spurgeon “Fish” Tanner (Robert Duvall), to head out and try to destroy the comet, which of course they don’t, in fact, they divide the comet in two (That’s no spoiler, you know they’re not going to destroy in the first shot) and the fucker is still headed towards Earth. Guess the outcome.Ok, first of all, how could such great actors like Morgan Freeman, Robert Duvall, Maximillian Schell, and Vanessa Redgrave sign up to this fucking drek? Furthermore, why the fuck was Steven Spielberg involved in this film? What a bunch of wasted talent. With such a lame-ass script written by Michael Tolkien, the film tumbles right from the beginning. Ok, the only upside was the probability of the situation, a meteor wiped the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, and it could happen today, we just don’t know when. That’s the only high point; it goes all downhill from there. The supposed twist at the beginning is so unoriginal and idiotic; it makes me want to cry. The rest of the plot leads to an artificial exercise in emotional manipulation that tries to make you feel sorry for the characters in the film. Sure, like I’d give a shit about Tea Leoni’s antics and problems. Mimi Leder can sign herself as candidate for worst director of the new millennium, because the manipulation exercise she gives out, doesn’t deliver a damn thing, and furthermore, it will either give out a few chuckles or even more so, a couple of pissed off rants. Also because Leder has directed such trash favorites like The Peacemaker and Pay It Forward. Leoni gives out one of the most wooden performances ever in the film, and like other people here, I was glad that she ended up dead in that huge-ass wave that hits the coast when the piece of meteor hits the earth, because Leoni is so bad here that sometimes I think if she had shown her tits and ass, maybe I would’ve liked this film, but I seriously doubt it, since with or without them, she can’t act, or maybe she doesn’t. Now, are we supposed to feel a damn thing about Leo marrying his sweetheart (Leelee Sobieski) at age 13? Guess not, because I didn’t feel a thing. As said before, the film is so repulsive and depressive that in the end, it doesn’t give out anything uplifting and leaves you in a dark void, just waiting for the knife to strike. Not even the speech of our President can help us from our utter depression.LOOK, lets cut the bullshit. The fucking film was predictable, if you’re smart enough like I think you are, the human side will always win, no matter what. That’s how many summer shit movies are always going to end. The good side always wins. Shit, how formulaic. Ok, maybe I’m going a bit off the edge, if a good movie uses this formula well, then yes, it’s worth a praise, but not this one. The ending of the film or climax has to be one of the lames plotholes ever, all wasting itself with the hill-climbing scene, which was a crock of shit. The FX was okay, but when it got to the comet, I just wanted to laugh. IT LOOKS LIKE A FUCKING PIECE OF CHEESE!!! What a lame effect, ugh.The worst of it all, was EVEN yet to come after the film ended. How in the FUCK did this film manage to gross so much millions, and how did it get so much positive praise when in reality it’s another wasted pile of celluloid? The answer lies in the billing. The fucker studio execs said probably “Hey, well, we have a bad script, but lets just bill Steven Spielberg on it, and we’ll fork out 150 million.” Yeah, that hype technique never fails, and unfortunately we don’t realize how shitty can a film turn out until we’re inside the theater praying for our lives and with our seven bucks wasted. The performances were horrible all over, Lot’s of talent wasted. To all those great actors and actresses that participated in this film: Please, next time read the script before agreeing to appear in it, because if you don’t, you’ll end up in the annals of Hollywood all without work and treated as has-beens, and that’s what kills an actor. Tea Leoni, please, go back to acting school because tits and ass aren’t going to get you far, I guarantee you, talent does, and unless you do something about it, you’ll end up being a talent-less bitch. Director Mimi Leder, you have a great future in girlsploitation, keep on going on your task in being Spielberg’s other bitch, since that’s what your only good for. Forget about filmmaking FOREVER!!!In the end, avoid this film, at all costs. I only recommend it for people who have certain suicidal tendencies, believe me; this is better than the knife or the pills. For us intelligent people, stay away from it man, it’s not worth your money or your life. (0.5-5)

The Movie:

It’s hard not to compare “Freedom Writers” with “Dangerous Minds.” The two films share a striking resemblance. If they both had been released within a year of each other, people would probably be a bit hesitant to see one or the other. Thankfully we have had a nice break from “Dangerous Minds” and are ready to see some more students needing help.

This film is based on a true story of a class that calls themselves the Freedom Writers and a teacher that gives her life to her students. Ms. Erin Gruwell, also called Ms. G (Hillary Swank) by her class, takes on her first teaching job at a school that has transitioned from one of the best schools in the state, to one of the worst. It is now filled kids who are consistently in trouble with the law and have no desire to go to school–they would rather die with their respective gangs than get an education they don’t believe gives them a better future. Upper management tells Ms. G that nothing else is expected of her besides just getting her students by. She is to give them second-hand books because there is no budget for them–she is to give them only the basics to learn because they can’t be expected to be smart enough–she is to give them no homework because the students won’t do it anyways. Despite no one else believing in these kids, she believes they can learn to accept their ‘rivals’ as friends and how to apply themselves to learning. She knows that they have heart, and if given the appropriate attention that they could do something amazing with their lives because they all have important stories to tell. Fighting an uphill battle to motivate not only these kids, but also the teaching staff, she commits her entire life to helping her students have a better future.

Hillary Swank puts on a powerful performance as a teacher who steps into a class of misfits and criminals, with her only goal to help these students. It comes at the expense of many things in her personal life. We truly believe that she is there for a purpose and her performance is completely heartfelt and honest. You can definitely tell that she has done her research and talked to the actual Erin Gruwell, because once they start shooting, she is Ms G.

Director Richard Lagravenese brings a compelling story of struggling teens to the big screen with ease. He easily sets “Freedom Writers” apart from “Dangerous Minds” and creates a drama that is easy to watch and sucks us into the hearts of Ms. G and her students. With a cast of only a few “known” actors, Lagravenese is able to mold each character to their real life counterpart and allow them to come alive.

Unfortunately, “Freedom Writers” did not receive the attention it deserved. With adequate distance between itself and “Dangerous Minds,” it still is that film that is like “Dangerous Minds.” But it is much more than that–it is a compelling story that deserves attention. The cast is fantastic with a story that draws you in from the beginning…if you give it a chance that is. Watch it…and let it co-exist with “Dangerous Minds.”

The DVD

Video:

We are treated with a fairly decent transfer that struggles at times. The colors are good, with nice skin tones, and an overall warm feeling. Unfortunately the contrast is a little high quite often and we lose detail pretty easily. Grain is present throughout, and we never really see that “pop” that we like to have when it comes to high-def.

Sound:

With a 5.1 Dolby Digital track, “Freedom Writers” tries to deliver a good overall track but doesn’t quite get there. With a film that is mainly dialogue, the two key places to focus are dialogue…and ambient noise in the surrounds. The dialogue is good, at times a little soft, but still audible. The surrounds very rarely get adequate use. It would be nice to have the dialogue, while in the background students are whispering and telling secrets in class. But overall, it is a fairly decent track that gets the job done.

Extras:

Commentary by Director Richard Lagravenese & Hilary Swank: The best part about this extra is hearing how the “true” story compares to the film. I think I would have enjoyed it much more if we had had a commentary from the real teacher and her thoughts about the students, and the passion behind her teaching. Swank isn’t present a lot in this commentary track, but Lagravenese does a very nice job bringing us through details about the characters and their true stories, with some nice input from Swank from time to time.

Deleted Scenes: 4 of them…not really worth a look.

Making a Dream: Just a quick making of “Freedom Writers.”

Freedom Writers Family: this is pretty nice to hear how they brought the characters to life and how they resemble their real life counterparts.

Freedom Writers: The Story Behind the Story: This gives us some background behind who these Freedom Writers were.

**In the last two features, we do see Ms. G (The real one) make an appearance and help us understand the story and the characters.**

Final Thoughts:

Freedom Writers” is a good flick. It is a definite watch when you have exhausted all of your big loud explosive demo material HD content. If you are in the mood for a compelling drama that takes on real life issues and is not afraid to hit them on the head, then “Freedom Writers” is for you. With a truly incredible story played out by a great cast, “Freedom Writers” is a no-brainer. Unfortunately the audio and video do not give us everything that they could have, but because the story itself is so poignant, this is definitely still worth it for me to Recommend this one.
